I've written since 2024 that waiting until people feel pain is a recipe for upheaval. The Shopify memo is not pain yet — hiring bars are invisible; nobody protests a job that was never posted. That's precisely what makes this phase dangerous: displacement without headlines. The politicians looking for the automation crisis are looking for layoffs. They should be looking at requisitions that quietly never opened.

Executives: if you've adopted the flipped default, own it publicly and pair it with a transition budget — secrecy here corrodes trust faster than automation does. Job seekers: the interview question underneath every interview is now "what do you add that the tools don't?" Have a real answer, with receipts. Policymakers: start tracking job postings foregone, not just jobs lost. The leading indicator changed this month.

The memo wasn't a scandal. It was a timestamp.
